Ask HN: Do online news articles have a long term traffic tail?

I'm curious to find out if online news articles (nytimes, huffpo, any other big news site) have any sort of long term traffic or if they die after a day or two. If anyone's worked for such an entity and is familiar with the stats, can you share the traffic patterns that exist for news articles?
