Anti-trawling mines in protected areas? Nothing needs to actually get blown up, the perceived risk just needs to be high enough to prevent it from being economicaly viable/insurable.

Seems like installing something to catch trawling nets would be the more reasonable approach.

I can see sinking something like tetrapods[0] to make trawling impossible. Possibly redesigned to really catch on nets.

I feel like there'd need to be some behavioral analysis done before implementing this. If someone is illegally trawling, seems like they'd have no qualms with abandoning shredded nets overboard then becoming an uncontrolled "ghost nets."

The purpose of AIS pings is to tell nearby vessels of your position and where you are going.

The reason why we see collections of these in databases is because there are large networks of coastal AIS receivers that records the pings. Some vessel carry transponders that can reach satellites.

One thing that companies like Kpler and Spire can do is to equip their customers fleet with receivers that record when and where a signal was picked up.

If one or two receivers picks up the same ping hundreds of miles away from where the ping says it is, then the position can be tagged and corrected in the database.

And if your business is to sell correct positional data, then, hey.

Reminds me of Pokémon Go spoofers. It falls to having to trust that the client is truthfully reporting. You could probably improve the AIS system and do the whole Apple Find My network crowdsource thing - letting ships triangulate one another. But you’re still trusting signals that can be spoofed

You can and people already do receive AIS with satellites. So that’s mostly possible without it being peer to peer. AIS only makes it about 50 miles across the ocean due to earth curvature so in sparsely populated areas a peer to peer approach probably won’t tell you too much.
