Anyone with any experience using Play?

I was at 3 Day Startup San Antonio this weekend and used Play to prototype a platform for e-learning. Deployed it to Heroku and I was happy with it.

It wasn't my first time using Play but I'm still getting a handle on it. I'm about to place a pre-order for this book as I think Play has a lot of promise but is still missing a few important features. It's also severely lacking in documentation.

I also used Play to build the front-end for my thesis project. My thesis was about taking a set of related Wikipedia documents, running them through Stanford's NLP library and using that to construct a semantic graph. The front-end for traversing that graph and integrating with Google Maps was all built in Play. By the time I was done it could show and justify a connection between the string "Britain" and the sentence "The Allies met at the Tehran and Yalta conferences to [...]" and place those connections on a map.

Yep, a decent amount.

I haven't used it since the big push towards Scala though. So whatever I say is based on the Java versions.

If your constraint is Java, then Play is a great way to get away from a lot of the cruft and overhead of that stack; however, you'll very quickly realise it's not all roses. The Java leaks through in a lot of places, and it's now quite far behind the stack it's mimicking (ie it feels more like Rails 1.2 - 2.0 rather than 3+).

For me, if I have the ability to not choose Java and I wanted that kind of stack, I'd just go to the horses mouth and pick Rails. If I had to use Java, Play is a pretty nice place to be.
