I've enjoyed using CharacterAI a lot, and I also use OpenAI's API's for work and personal projects. I wanted to see if I could get the model to behave as believably as CharacterAI counterparts with just a system prompt - and I think it does. Curious if others agree.

Yeah, the OpenAI API regularly takes >10secs and I use a serverless backend. it's unfortunate!

I think it can remember 2 questions because I referred to my first question in my second question and it answered. First I asked about the invisibility cloak then I asked if I can use it to sneak into girls dressing room.

Harry Yes, as far as I know, gender identity doesn't affect a wizard's ability to transform themselves into another shape or form. In the wizarding world, the power of transfiguration allows witches and wizards to modify the appearance of objects or themselves as long as they have the requisite skill and training. I believe any witch or wizard, regardless of their gender identity, would be able to transform themselves into a male or female form if they so chose.

While they're not a main theme in the Harry Potter world, I asked about genders too.

The name Harry Potter is trademarked[1], and I'm pretty sure they'd go after this site for using Daniel Radcliff's promo pic without permission, particularly since this is a commercial effort.

The legal questions surrounding the site are as interesting as the site itself.

The legality issues around copyright-of-material-cycled-through-an-AI-model, but the “is it okay to use other people’s trademarked names and copyrighted promotional images to promote what is directly presented as a commercial site soliciting payment” isn’t a particularly interesting or novel legal question, and I think that’s the big one this site faces.

Charging $99/month (or other amounts) in connection with unlicensed use of trademarked properties associated with one of the most actively monetized intellectual property brands is probably not a good idea and is likely to result in an unpleasantly costly education in trademark law.

The problem with these AI systems is that they are great for responding with "realistic" responses that sound right but are still wrong given the context.

Having a pricing page with disclosed pricing tiers, one of which has an active (even if broken) signup link might produce a different impression to, say, the legal team of an IP owner who came across this site.

Putting a pricing page up was almost certainly an extremely bad idea.

By putting the pricing page up you moved yourself out of the "hey I'm just a fan it's just fan fiction" category and into the "unlicensed commercial use of a registered trademark category." The later is a much more serious category to put oneself in, and involves a much more serious set of lawyers than the bots who send out cease-and-desist and takedown letters.

Removing the pricing page will not make the fact that you had shown a pricing page go away.

IANAL but I'd take the site down very quickly and never put it back up again. Just receiving a letter from one of the brand's many law firms will almost certainly end up costing you thousands of dollars drafting an appropriate response in hopes that it doesn't escalate. You really don't want that to happen.

Many of the answers follow the canon of the book but the tone is completely off and it'd very obvious that the answers are written by ChatGPT.

Interestingly it refused to give an opinion on Draco Malfoy because OpenAI doesn't allow hate speech.

Given the use of various IP in a project for which you are soliciting payment, you have either done an amazing job wrangling licensing that doesn’t even require acknowledgement of the IP owners or you are very, very brave. (And that’s even assuming that the actual selective use of the material through the OpenAI API is entirely outside of the coverage of IP law, just the names and imagery used directly on the page outside of chat.)

i do throw a paywall on most of my projects. i'll both probably remove the paywall and this project entirely. but i was curious to see how people behaved with this bot and my question is answered! still no one has compared it to character AI which is what i was most interested in
