When the exodus from Tumblr happened, the internet got a lot crazier and I am not yet sure that I mean the eccentric and quirky version of crazy here.

If platforms would have never listened to advertisers, we would not have this problem. And advertisers would still pay for attention. Youtube could have just said that you either accept all content or you won't get the attention. I doubt they would have lost any advertisers at all.

This is a pretty naïve take. Even products you pay a subscription for want you to keep using them (or you'll be at risk of cancelling), and they will resort to the same growth hacks to do so. The key difference is whether a product relies on recurring revenue, and the source of that recurring revenue makes no difference.
