Ask HN: Where and how to start in Non deep learning AI research?

I would like to do research in non deep learning AI. Any ideas where to start? What are some possible research areas? Hopefully not requiring years of study before any result. Also hopefully, not requiring huge computational resources.

I have a masters in algorithms and am familiar with papers and research and have general understanding in AI topics.
