Yes there is a lack of good engineering talent, and everyone is hiring. But no, they won't just hire anyone who can code.

The team I work with is very picky (in a good way). The philosophy is "only hire if the candidate will raise the average competence of the team".

Also, when we feel we've reached a high enough standard, we can sustain more junior candidates.
