One thing the article doesn't say is that it ought to be possible to synthesize fuel on an aircraft carrier using nuclear energy, water from the sea, and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The cost will be eye-popping compared to petroleum-based fuel, but such an aircraft carrier could keep its air wing supplied with fuel without having to slow down to take on fuel from a tanker... The navy is certainly paying a lot more for fuel on an aircraft carrier than you pay for fuel at your local gas station.
