Well, back in the 70s and into the 80s I remember the narrative was that we were heading for an ice age. There were children's cartoons, movies, news stories.

And then the global warming thing came along, and for a while you could discuss it, but once politicians realized they could use that to get all the power they wanted, there's no rational discussion of it at all. There's the orthodox view, and everyone else is a 'denier'.

That's the main impact. It's injected partisan politics into many aspects of life, and made the most boring part of the newscast (the weather) anxiety inducing for many.
