Ask HN: Reduce Packet Latency in SOM

I have a relatively low power SOM with the goal of reducing packet latency to a server as much as possible. I'm using real time Linux techniques and tightly coded C, but are there any obscure techniques or papers that could assist further? I'd try compressing the packets before sending them, but given how slow the SOM is I worry that would help in this circumstance.
