Basically a function of Fourier transforms applied over gears to create any representation of space. Nice.

One of the interesting points is that this is about 50 years before Fourier claimed FT was possible.

Oh yea totally. It's just interesting to see how everything can be recorded as a series of cycles at different ratios / gearing. Really cool.
