Ask HN: How common is publishing line item costs with a product?

I've seen this just a few times and I thought it was cool to see a cost breakdown of some item or service. It could be broken down in various levels of detail, aggregated by materials, labor, and overhead, or down to individual component costs.

Have you seen this practice? Is there a name for it? Are there good reasons why this not a good idea?
