ASK HN: Generic backend interface for web apps

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a generic backend interface for web apps. Sure we could be lazy and just use phpmyadmin for playing with simple apps that we can't be bothered to build a backend for. But is there a generic product that can be intelligently incorporated without too much hassle.
