I'm looking for something like Personal Capital or Mint but would prefer open source, offline first version instead. Curious what the HN crowd uses

I have used Gnucash for years now. I import my bank statements on a periodic basis and code the transactions from there.

This is great. Does it aggregate investments too and understand 401k?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I am UK based, so 401k is not relevant to me.

Gnucasg is a double entry system, so I use it to track spend and keep records of my assets.

I don't have a lot of sources and GNU Cash had a problem with importing my bank's output XLS files. So every three months (quarter) I copy paste my transactions into an excel sheet. I have one account that I use for unimportant and small transactions. So all the small transactions get separated from the main accounts which I track meticulously. I categorise transactions and I know exactly how much money I've spent on all the different categories.

Couldn't you save the xls as csv? I use the qif format, but not all banks offer it.

I was using a xls that I’d plug csv exports from bank into but wife wanted an actual product so we now use youneedabudget (YNAB) - it does the same thing but looks flashy and has a mobile app

It's not offline or open source but I love Qube Money. No transactions to import because you choose category to spend from before you can swipe your Debit Card. For regular bills I still use a separate account/CC but this has allowed me and my SO to spend a lot less time budgeting.
