Ask HN: Ideas to fix the problems at Facebook?

Facebook is getting a lot of backlash lately, with a lot of feedback agreeing with the criticism. There are a lot of smart people here, and likely many folks from FB. Can we give them some constructive ideas on how to fix the problems at FB?

They have plenty of constructive ideas that they've chosen not to implement.

I've decided my time would be better spent writing a letter to the Attorney General of Delaware to request that they petition the state's Chancery Court to legally dissolve Facebook.

I agree ^ however I would say the very early days of fb that was basically a chronological update of friends statuses is all I ever wanted, and I can’t see many problems with them operating that.

The issue of course is they couldn’t make huge revenues providing that.. they need all the ads, news, attention grabbing crap… and fb will never make that change.

Would you even trust them if they did?

I honestly think the answer is some transparent service that provides what I describe in the first paragraph.. may be a not for profit or open source solution.

Couldn't agree more.

Here's one person's story. I joined in 2008 and it seemed a benign and cosy place to be. I didn't use it a lot, but I felt good about it. After a few years it started to feel a bit less comfortable. To be fair that was due to posts that people started making.

Quite soon all I saw was email notifications of people wishing me a happy birthday.

I logged on at the start of the year, and what a different place it was. I had decided to cancel the account I wasn't using and I was left in no doubt that it was a right decision. Friends posted that they would miss me. I had posted nothing for a decade.

So recreate 2008, and I might, just possibly, come back.

Don't curate suggestions to appease political or financial ambitions. I think a simple popularity filter should work best. Yes, popular content isn't the best content. But only when people get bored of it they will search for other sources.

They have more competent people with better ideas but I think they are not serious to resolve the problem.
