Why HN team is not focusing on site UI?

The design is probably a matter of taste, but i think HN is one of the most usable sites on the net for what it is supposed to do.

What is the reference here? Most alternatives are terrible.

Because HN usually does not respond well to changes, so they are afraid to get negative feedback.

Or it is just fine like it is. I like it, even on mobile, I have it on 125% on my iPhone and I can navigate very well.

It works quite well utilizing KISS principle; if you want dark mode then there's https://darkhn.herokuapp.com and https://hckrnews.com if you want to see dead submissions.

Not everything has to look like reddit, instagram or imgur, pinterest. The minimal site interface allowed me to browse it on an older iPad once while I couldn't access sites and content of above mentioned.

This is what I loved about Craiglist, but the public didn't seem to agree as the classifieds market has very unfortunately started to become fractured - and primarily to Facebook Marketplace, the worst of them all.

You should explain what makes you think that this UI shows lack of focus...

The "search" field is probably where some may not expect it. And the #f6f6ef background when inverted will not go full black/off, a nuisance if anyone used an OLED display - but for this latter, OLED display owners probably use intermediate software to tweak the original interface (otherwise, colours are part of a recognizable trademark, not just a function oriented component). If I do not see other points to note, others equally will not. Do not have people guess.

Please ycombinator, I most humbly beseech you, to never ever play UX du jour games.

My daily dose of HN may well be my last link to something resembling the product of a sane mind. Surely you do not want to send a helpless old man into to the abyss of insanity?

There are bazillions of alternative HN UIs as the API is freely available.

So it is good that the standard interface is very conservative and accessible.

Why do you say they don't focus on site UI? This is one of the fastest, most focused sites I've used, and certainly the fastest I use regularly.
