Ask HN: Early employees of successful exits, what has been your experience?

Just wondering whether key employees that are given 0.25-1% stock have their shares diluted into oblivion.

In essence, how rare is "being rewarded as expected" when the company exits successfully? And by "successfully" I mean the amount left after the investors are made whole.
