What's the etiquette at hack-a-thons?

So I recently went to a hack-a-thon. I showed up late. I had a project on my laptop that I could have worked on, but I was open to trying something new. Is there a proper etiquette to jump in somewhere? Are most people there with their groups as a change of scenery?
