Ask HN: Open Source Member management system?

I'm trying to run a membership based group and am weighing out member management systems.

In the cloud source world, I'm heavily weighing just using Wild Apricot, but would rather use OSS.

It's pretty damn hard to compare software like CiviCRM, zenbership, tendenci in terms of functionality and how hard it is to self host.

Any recommendations, war stories about membership software?
