Ask HN: What do startups do with the excessive funds?

Let's say a Startup raised $2Mn and they're going to use only half of it in their first year of operation, and the rest the next year. What do startups do with the other half which is left during the first year?

Do they get investment in tranches? What're the other benefits of dispatching the investment in tranches for the investors and the startup.

Also, roughly, how many startups get the whole amount in one go and what do they do with the amount which they're not going to use for a while?
