Ask HN: Has anybody self-hosted their servers

There was a reddit thread where there was an individual that was shutting down because their high AWS costs compared to what was coming in. Another user suggested self hosting the processing part so that you can offload the data to a local server/desktop to save money and go from there. Has anybody tried this before with success? If so, did you have to upgrade your internet to get a static IP or at least allow for the self hosting?
