Ask HN: How do you manage your digital photos?

I'm the member of family who manages our collection of digital photographs.

What are your strategies of organizing photos? How do you backup your collection? Do you make your library append-only? If so, how? Finally, what software do you use?

(I prefer open source solutions but all answers are welcome.)
