Getting residence to startup?

Does anyone have experience with trying to switch from h1b (or other non-immigrant visa) to being permanently resident in order to form a startup? As far as I can tell, there is no easy way to go about this. In fact, its all quite bizarre. I can start a company but I can't work for it :-)
